Richard S. Sutton

Chief Scientific Advisor, DeepMind; Professor, Department of Computing Science, University of Alberta

Richard Sutton is a Canadian computer scientist and one of the pioneers of reinforcement learning (RL). Currently Professor at the University of Alberta and Chief Scientific Advisor at DeepMind, Sutton has shaped the theoretical foundations and practical applications of RL, which underpins much of modern AI. His textbook Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction (co-authored with Andrew Barto) is regarded as the field’s definitive reference. Sutton’s research has influenced robotics, gaming, and autonomous systems, and he is a strong advocate for general methods that allow agents to learn from interaction with their environments rather than hand-coded rules.
