Gary Marcus

Professor Emeritus, New York University; Founder, Geometric Intelligence

Gary Marcus is a cognitive scientist, entrepreneur, and one of the most prominent critics of current large language model approaches to artificial intelligence. A former professor at New York University, Marcus specialises in psychology, neuroscience, and human cognition. He founded Geometric Intelligence, a machine learning company later acquired by Uber, where he led AI efforts. Marcus is known for arguing that deep learning alone is insufficient for achieving reliable, trustworthy artificial intelligence, advocating instead for hybrid systems that combine neural networks with symbolic reasoning and structured knowledge.
